Our hockey season has already begun…

Just what do a bunch of North Americaners in the Dominican Republic do to keep close to their roots? Why, play hockey of course!
We used to play out on the landing strip at the old airport until one day, after weeks of being rained out, we decided to search for another local. That rainy Friday evening Carson, Anton and I set out, determined to find ourselves a decent stretch of smooth concrete with a roof, where we could play rain or shine…
After a couple of hours searching and several cold beers Carson came up with the brilliant idea to call this guy he had met 5 years ago who plays on the National Dominican Rollar Hockey League (who knew?!?!) Do you believe that the guy not only had the same cell number, but that he remembered Carson, the Canadian with a mean slap shot?
(And those of you who know Carson laugh, since he is so clearly unforgettable.)
Needless to say, the phone conversation not only led us to a (some-what) smooth chunk of concrete, indoors, it led to a much greater discovery… nets!
Since then we have made it our aim to play at least once a week (which is difficult when the team’s social coordinator is flying to a new country every 10 days, and when punk kids steal the wire, and eventually the lights, leaving us straining to see, playing off the sound of the ball on the stick more than anything.)
The team pictured here, from left to right is Ronald Thrasher (who gave our wedding talk, and was on his way to becoming a pro-hockey player before deciding on missionary work), Alan (another hockey genius and Carson’s dad), Carson, me and Anton. Mari, a sister in our congregation from Japan also throws on some skates, as do several others, Jessica, my 14 year old student included. We’ve had some pretty big groups out there, and it helps us bring a little bit of “back home” to our current home.

Looks fun..I have only been to a Sharks game but have never played hockey myself BUT…recently been playing baseball and Soccer every Sunday(my old Highschool sport) and I forgot how much I loved it!!! Bittersweet about your car too..hope it gets fixed soon…Lily
